Karhunulkki Nature Trail

The Karhunulkki Nature Trail is 24 km north-west of Rovaniemi, in the village of Lehtojärvi. It passes through picturesque pine forests up to the rocky peak of Karhunulkki, which offers spectacular views over the area’s lakes.


It starts from the parking area, crosses Pellontie and continues 320 m along Karhulammentie until it turns right and follows a power line across Nuoraoja. Soon after Nuoraoja, the trail turns left onto a path through a dry, coniferous forest up onto the hill. It ends on the rocky peak of Karhunulkki, where hikers get to enjoy incredible views. The length one way is 3.8 km. It is open in the snow-free season, and it is suitable for day-trips.


The parking area features a table, benches, an information board, and jungle gyms for children. Close to the start, at Nuoraoja, there is a resting spot.


Directions: Drive around 20.7 km out of Rovaniemi along Kittiläntie to Sinettä; turn left on Pellontie; drive around 6.9 km; turn left into the parking area. The Lehtojärvi Traditional Trail also starts at the parking area.

Reittiä mahdotonta seurata metsässä reitin merkintöjen puuttumisen vuoksi. Hiekkatietä kyllä pääsee jo melkein perille Karhunulkille.

Keltaisella merkityt tolpat vievät perille polkua pitkin varsin selkeästi. Ylempänä tulee monta risteävää polkua, mutta keltaisia seuraamalla on helppo löytää perille näköalapaikalle. Oranssit tolpat kuuluvat Mäntyvaara - Pohtimolampi -ulkoilureitille. Toukokuun lopulla oli vielä paljon lunta Karhunulkin pohjoisrinteellä, joten loppumatka meni lumessa kahlaamiseksi.

Polkua pitkin rauhalliseen nousuun saa varata aikaa 1,5 h. Paluumatkaan meni alamäkeen autotietä pitkin noin puoli tuntia.

Mielestäni Etiäisen sivulla oleva kirjallinen reittiopastus ei pidä paikkaansa: "Karhunulkin luontopolku alkaa pysäköintialueelta, jolta lähdettäessä ylitetään ensin Pellontie ja jatketaan siitä Karhulammentietä noin 320 m, josta käännytään oikealle ja jatketaan sähkölinjaa Nuoraojan ylitse. Polku kääntyy kohta Nuoraojan jälkeen vasemmalle kangaspolkua pitkin ylös vaaraan".
Omaa menoa tuo ei haittaa, kun on kartta ja suunnistustaito ja voi mennä merkitsemätöntäkin reittiä, mutta tuon annetun ohjeen mukaan en itse osaisi mennä kohteeseen.

Autolla tosiaan pääsee suoraan näköalapaikan juurelle.

Itse seurasin keltapäisiä polkumerkkejä, mutta perille taitaa päästä montaa reittiä. :)

Polun varrella osa polkumerkeistä on kaatunut, joten puron ylityksen jälkeinen kääntyminen vasemmalle tapahtuu hieman arpapelillä. Kyseessä taisi kuitenkin olla toinen selkeämpi vasemmalle kääntyvä polku.

Rinteessä epäselkeä Y-risteys, jossa mennään oikealle. Polkumerkit ilmestyvät siinä melko pian.
